Aim & Scope

The International Association of School Librarianship: IASL was established in 1971 with an aim to promote activities of school librarians worldwide. Jean Lowrie, Western Michigan University, U.S and others served to its first formation in Jamaica. Since a first international conference in London held in the following year, annual conferences and forums have been consecutively implemented every year. They have been providing school librarians, teachers and researchers opportunities to discuss about effective utilizations of school libraries.

The 2016 IASL Tokyo Organizing Committee (Chair: Noritada Otaki, the Librarian of the National Diet Library) hosts the 45th Annual International Conference & the 20th International Forum on Research in School Librarians in Tokyo that will be held from August 22 through 26, 2016 at Meiji University, Tokyo. The first ever conference in Japan will be conducted under the theme: “A School Library Build for the Digital Age”.

Today, vast amounts of information are accessible through Internets. In such a digital age, how the definition of school libraries has changed? Further, what sort of services becomes available in a highly digitalized school library? The conference provides you a great chance to encounter examples practiced in the worlds.  Also, through the conference, you can extend relations worldwide among people in school librarians. We hope that many of librarians and teachers at schools, researchers, university and graduate students are attending the conference.
